The guys weren’t kidding when they said they were going to throw a party. I had spent the day dodging random people who were coming in and out to set up. There had been caterers, a DJ, and at least ten people removing any valuables in the house and moving furniture around. I walked downstairs to hesitantly join the party in a pair of jeans and an emerald green t-shirt, only to see a group of girls in mini dresses and skirts. I turned right back around and changed into a short, black bodycon dress and heels. I wasn’t exactly trying to dress to impress, but I certainly didn’t want to stand out by under dressing.

I waded through the crowd of people to get to the kitchen for a drink and something to eat. The atmosphere was the same as any house party: loud music, drinks, lots of people, and pizza. Except, this pizza and these drinks were catered and bartended. It was kind of funny to see girls dancing to the latest pop hits in a living room while sipping expensive drinks instead of looking like college kids drinking cheap beer out of red plastic cups. I wondered if there would be a keg stand later.

There was a bar in the hearth room already, so I imagined the bartender was in there. I picked up a plate filled with fancy finger foods and a slice of pizza and headed towards the bar. A martini sounded great tonight. It was the most crowded in the hearth room and I squeezed my way to the bar. I felt the eyes of a trio of girls before I turned to acknowledge them. And I say girls intentionally because they barely looked twenty-one. Giving them a small smile, I turned back to the bartender as he approached me. I ordered a martini and was presented with a drink with gold leaf around the rim. These guys apparently went all out for their New Year’s parties.

Turning back, I saw the girls still looking at me. “Hello,” I said and smiled again before sipping my drink. It was perfect.

“Who are you here with?” one girl asked. She crossed her arms over her chest.

“Nobody,” I replied.

“Which gang?” she clarified, like I was dense.

“None, I guess,” I replied.

“We haven’t seen you before,” another girl said and flicked her perfectly styled brown hair over her shoulder.

“Oh, I’m new,” I said and decided that despite their bratty attitudes, I was going to remain kind. I was most definitely not going to start a gang war in the hearth room.

“Who are you going after tonight?” the first girl asked and looked me up and down.

“Right now, just these bruschetta bites,” I said with a laugh and gestured with the plate in my hand.

“Well, the trio is ours,” the brunette said with a sneer.

“Who?” I asked, realizing just after the words came out that she meant my guys… er, the guys. “Oh, Devon, Sterling, and Milo?”

They nodded.

“Here, do you know where they are? I can start up a conversation for you.
